I have always had an interest in art and architecture, and when I started working at Concept Lighting in Auckland I gained experience as a lighting designer, with Richard Ponting teaching me the basics of the practice.

I was one of the youngest winners when I won two Illumination Engineering Society of NZ lighting awards, and on the strength of the reference I received from these award winning projects I was hired by a boutique company called Lightplan in London. Its principal was lighting designer John Roberts who specialized in lighting for luxury homes and yachts, and specialist projects – many of them offshore.

Working closely with John taught me to appreciate lighting design as an art. Lightplan had just been commissioned to design the lighting for Elton John’s country estate, which provided an exciting artistic challenge and invaluable experience in the profession for me. I worked for two years on this project and learnt how to work with a large construction team while also dealing with onsite issues as they arose.

In 1992 I returned to New Zealand and established Jane Purdue Lighting Design.

I chose to work independently because I did not want to be committed to using any particular product which would reduce my design options.

I live and work in Lyttleton; and from my home office I have worked on projects all over the country specialising in residential, landscape and hospitality designs. Lighting design must be functional; but I believe that good lighting design should also subtly embrace and enhance the architecture.

I can help you create a lighting design that is as individual as you are.

Please contact me and we can talk through the most appropriate way to meet your requirements.

CLIENTS TESTIMONIALS

  • “I came across Jane’s work many years ago when I worked in television and found her approach to lighting inspirational. Many years later, when building my first house, it was therefore a natural progression to ask her to develop a lighting plan for me.

  • “Jane is one of those ‘safe pair of hands’ that you can rely on to deliver a GREAT outcome. This is particularly important when you’re wanting (as I was) to push the ‘design envelope’ just a little, as you need to trust your designer 100% when that’s the case.

  • “The outcome has been more than I could have hoped for, quite literally bringing another whole dimension to my home. I particularly love how I can adapt how my lighting expresses, by turning some areas and features up, and others down. The result is therefore always something that matches my mood and/or whatever I’m doing at a practical level in my house at that time.

  • “I don’t think of what Jane does as ‘lighting’, it’s ‘art’.

  • “One of the most important things I learned from her is to avoid the temptation to splash out on fancy lightshades – focus instead on the EFFECT that a few simple but carefully selected and well positioned fittings deliver.”

  • I have worked with Jane since 2002 on several large, high end homes and projects.

She is a true professional and an absolute treasure to work with, with an abundance of knowledge in both Lighting and Architectural fields.

I highly recommend Jane for your lighting needs. She is fabulous…. and my clients rave about her work.
